What battery does my film camera take?

Find your camera on this page. Most 1970s and 80s SLRs take button cells (LR44 / SR44, or a stack of four as a 4LR44 / PX28), and most 1990s compacts take a CR2 or CR123A lithium cell.

What is the difference between LR44 and SR44?

Same size, different chemistry. SR44 (silver oxide) holds a steady voltage until it's nearly flat, so light meters stay accurate; LR44 (alkaline) is cheaper but its voltage drops as it runs down. For metering, SR44 is the better choice.

My camera takes a PX625 mercury battery. What do I use now?

Mercury cells were banned in the 1990s. They gave 1.35V; modern 1.5V alkaline replacements (LR9 / 625A) make many meters read about one stop out. Use a zinc-air 675 hearing aid cell in an adapter, a Wein cell, or an MR-9 adapter with an SR43, or simply allow for the difference.

Will my camera work without a battery?

Fully mechanical cameras will: the Pentax K1000, Nikon FM2, Olympus OM-1, Leica M-series, Hasselblad 500C/M and most TLRs. Only the light meter needs the battery. Electronic cameras such as the Canon AE-1 won't fire at all without one.
